ABOUT

OQ2D (Office for Qualitative and Quantitative Design) is a multidisciplinary spatial design and research practice based in New York City. OQ2D’s work and research focus on producing highly contextual, flexible, and poetic spaces.

Founded in 2022 at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture by partners E.J. Shin and Mikhail Kossir, OQ2D’s portfolio includes work across various scales, from residential and interior renovation projects, temporary structures, and public installations to climate and natural building materials research.

OQ2D members have been awarded the 2024 Percival Goodman Fellowship for natural building materials research and construction, as well as AIA’s 2025 ArchWeek for architectural education.

Manifesto

We understand design as a constant oscillation between qualitative and quantitative approaches – an attempt to suggest precise, provocative, and poetic solutions to physical problems.

We believe architecture is a field of knowledge and practice – a filter through which reality can be observed, questioned, and reshaped.

We approach architecture as a cultural practice whereby designs and spatial interventions emerge as both reflections of, and projections on, their contexts.

We practice design as an act of threading lines between distinct categories and frames of reference, in an attempt to build logics that operate across scales– human / non-human; physical / poetic; local / diffuse;

While we concede design cannot single-handingly solve world hunger, we believe it can only be practiced in a state of nearly delusional optimism.

We reject notions of styles, movements, or language; design – both in its performance and poetics – either works or doesn't. Similarly, we see architecture as an act of designing  conditions rather than conditioning designs.

We believe that through architectural tools and thought, most projects and experiments can be turned into an opportunity for subverting the status quo – from brothels to museums, design is everywhere.

“We should remember that there is no social or political change without the movements and programs that transgress supposedly stable institutionality; there is no architecture without everyday life, movement, and action.”

Design is a game of rules. All rules – existing or imagined – can be broken under the right circumstances.
